Ahh the Iron Boots in Twilight Princess, they've become far more useful than any previous incarnations of it. They help you to: catch the many ton gorons rolling toward you, and to sumo wrestle the same many ton Gorons, help you bypass the geysers that block your path, they help you walk on the walks and the ceilings in goron mines (and the secret chamber nearby it in hyrule fields), play a part in puzzles, are necessary to defeat (and not just be able to fight) many different bosses, and of course you can't forget it allowing you to walk on the ground underneath water.
Also it can be used in conjunction with the Hookshots.
You know I actually tried to equip all the items and equipment that impede Link's movement (iron boots, ball and chain, depowered magic armor). I did it on snowpeak, and as I walking, I actually fell into a hole into a secret place, without digging. I was just walking along and *boom* sank into a hole. Also, I can't quite remember but I believed that it either, extremely impeded you're movement, or just acted as if one of the impeding movement items/equipment was equip.
